Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Ahmedabad, successfully conducts Gujarat’s first independently done MitraClip procedure

Repairing the mitral valve in severe mitral regurgitation (MR) by a Clip placed in the middle of the mitral valve via a catheter from the leg vein without open heart surgery, i.e., without opening up the chest and without cardiopulmonary bypass

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India]: First time independently in Gujarat, the team of doctors at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Ahmedabad, successfully conducted the MitraClip procedure, an extremely challenging heart valve procedure. The team of doctors was led by Dr Manik Chopra, who is the Clinical lead for Structural heart disease interventions at Narayana Health and included Dr Satish Govind, Dr Sumit Dheer, Dr Vyom Mori, Dr Atul Maslekar, Dr Alpesh Patel and Dr Hetal Shah.

Mr. Mansukhbhai B Gondaliya, 58 years old male, had suffered a major heart attack in 2016 and had also undergone a coronary angioplasty with stenting for the same. However, his heart muscles had failed to recover, and he had poor heart pumping. He remained stable and asymptomatic for a few years on medications. However, his heart slowly enlarged over these years, leading to leakage in the mitral valve, i.e., mitral regurgitation (MR), which finally became severe enough to cause breathing difficulty on minimal exertion and heart failure symptoms for the last few months. He had taken multiple cardiac surgeons’ opinions but was found to be at very high risk for open heart surgery.

He then consulted Dr Manik Chopra, who subspecializes and is an expert in Structural heart disease interventions which deal with transcatheter heart valve procedures, i.e., treating heart valve diseases via catheters introduced from the blood vessels without open heart surgery, i.e., opening the chest and without cardiopulmonary bypass. He advised him to undergo the MitraClip procedure, which is a much safer procedure in such a scenario as it is done without open heart surgery, i.e., opening up the chest and without cardiopulmonary bypass. He underwent the above procedure in which a clip called MitraClip was placed in the middle of the mitral valve via a catheter from the right leg vein (femoral vein). The procedure was completed in just one and a half hours with an excellent end result – practically no mitral regurgitation (MR) and no complications.

Mr. Gondaliya was discharged after four days and resumed his routine activities easily without any breathing difficulty. We are a centre of excellence for transcatheter heart valve procedures such as the Mitraclip procedure and other such transcatheter heart valve procedures like transcatheter aortic valve replacement or implantation (TAVR/TAVI), transcatheter mitral valve replacement or implantation (TMVR/TMVI), transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement or implantation (TPVR/TPVI) and transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement or implantation (TTVR/TTVI) – said Dr. Manik Chopra, who is a national and international leader for Structural heart disease interventions with experience of 400+ transcatheter heart valve procedures spread across 16 countries, 50+ cities and 130+ cardiac centres since mid-2019 and is available at Narayana Multispecialty Hospital, Ahmedabad.
